just another day in the studio

With the last couple of deadlines behind me and thanskgiving fast becoming a blur, I began working on what will be a large scale washer sculpture and hung up the three newest rust prints to dry. I will spend today out of the studio and tommorow I have to work, but on staurday I plan to get an early start and make some real headway on the sculpture. It feels good to be working with no deadline in sight, although there are murmurings of some more opportunities for 2007, in the meantime the show in North carolina opens next week, and I won't get to see it until january when it comes down, hopefully someone will take pictures and email them to me so I can post them here sooner than january, that's all for now, time to do laundry.

new video and back to work in the studio

these are a couple of new rust prints the one on the left is already starting to turn another day or so and it will be readyif you look on the floor in front of the big steel box you can see where i am begining to layout the new washer sculpture

this is our post holiday healthy meal, grilled salmon a la jonathan and mixed greens with warm pears a la brooke

these are the washers that will become a new sculpture in the course of the nex t couple of weeks.
here is a video from my hour and a half in texas. I am doing the most cowboy thing i can think of... eating beef jerky in texas.

well i spent monday getting back on task, i started two more rust prints and will get the third one rusting today, I also prepped some washers for a new object similar to the ones i sent to north carolina, but slightly bigger. We also tried to make up for all the eating over the holiday by having a nice healthy dinner, the menu was grilled salmon a la jonathan, and mixed green salad with warm pears a la brooke, it was very good. today I will continue working on the rust prints and hopefully start prepping for the construction of the new sculpture.

there it is the clinton library, amazing experience if you are ever in little rock
this is a view from the "big damn bridge" in little rock( so named because it is on top of a lock and damn)

this our thanksgiving bird getting to know the toadLinkthis is how brooke and I travel, my apologies to julia bradshaw's flying series

we have begun the trek back across the country and will be in san jose in just a couple of hours. Little rocked, and we ate way too much food, see the above images for a sample of the food consumed. I am glad we took a few days to give thanks but tommorow it is back in to the studio to resume work on those primary structures, and I have a new series of organic structures to create along with the primary structures, that will pretty much keep me busy until new years. The North carolina show opens next week and I will post the hours of operation for that show soon, that's all for now and god bless t-mobile hotspots, starbucks pepermint mochas, and my flickr site which has all the rest of my little rock pictures.

time to consume some turkey

the begining of a new drawingi don't know there is just something about that nail gun on top of that small crate like sculpture
there is something also satisfying about this arrangement with the structures played against the organic piece

a couple of ghost coffee cupsnothing makes zero the cat happier than a fresh from the drier pile of laundry, mmm so warm and toasty

this is the influence that crate building has had on my work, it is starting to look a bit like architecture
this is a new drawing I am working on, it is made with lumber marking crayons on scrap pieces of mdf

well yesterday was a nice casual day in the studio. I worked on a couple new drawings that are on lefover pieces of mdf. i am using these lumber marking crayons which come in red yellow blue and black, i think some of these drawings may become prints, but I will let them develop and see where it leads. I also think that the experience of building all those crates for the rust never sleeps show, and building all those walls for my mfa show, and building on those displays for the charles krafft show, have left me thinking about structures as you can see from the crate like constructions now haunting my studio. I will be heading to little rock arkansas, as if there is any other little rock, tommorow and will try and update from there otherwise I will post an y photos on my flickr site, happy thanksgiving.

so many deadlines, so let's blow them off and go to the city

staring into the void, or just another mediocre anish kapoor

well both brooke and myself have several application deadlines looming, so rather than give up an entire sunday to work, we took off to san francisco to check out the quilts of geez bend and the many other treasures on display at the de young museum in golden gate park, after that we ran by giant robot in the haight and then hit trader joes before coming home and watching desperate housewives, after which we resumed our respective work. Myself I am applying for a couple of opportunities, but don't want to jynx them yet, additionally I am putting together a new artist information packet since I have been so busy this year that I have not made a new packet in well over a year. wednesday we are off to little rock for thanksgiving, can't wait. for more images head to my flickr site

a day of playing around in the studio

I was cleaning up a bit and came across these bent steel pipe sections that sarah lowe gave me a couple of years ago, and I began arranging them and cutting them and then I numbered them and welded them together in a continuos line. Although I am thousands of miles away and many years removed i was immediately reminded of some of my earlier adventures with bent carolina grape vine, oh well such is life .

Been busy,and minimal

well i heard from phoebe at the EUC gallery in North carolina and the work got there okay. As soon as I have pictures from her of the show i will post them here or on my flickr page, lately I have been playing around with the steel from the pushing over the stack of steel video, and making simple constructions. I feel no particular attachment to this material as it was free, and I can always recycle it if I feel like it. next week we will be going to little rock arkansas for thanksgiving, and that will give me some time out of the studio to think.

dispatches from inside the white cube

here are the tools of the gallery preparator,
well I spent the day installing the current show at work, for my extended lunch break I snuck an hour and a half in the studio cleaning up, sometimes sweeping and organizing can be as effective as actually making anything. and I think my show arrived in North carolina but I am not sure, the online tracking says something about an exception scan whatever that means, hopefully it just means they took veterans day off, at least somebody did because I sure didn't

Don't trust anyone over 30, and that includes me

sometimes frosting just tastes better from the bottom of a birthday candle

no matter how old I get shiny stuff, like this mylar wrapping paper, still keeps me amused
a minimalist brithday gift from brooke

here are the new shoes I got for my big 3,oh
well I quietly turned 30 today. I spent the first part of the day receiving phone calls and well wishes on my advanced age, and then I spent the afternoon installing an art show with owen, who gave me a 30th anniversery edition of shel silversteins where the sidewalk ends, and then I gave a short presentation on richard serra's tilted arc in Dore Bowen's seminar, the celebration really took shape when Brooke and I went to vung tau for a traditional vietnamese dinner. When I got home brooke suprised me with a gift, that she had hidden in the refrigerator along with the cake, well turning thirty isn't all bad I did get a new pair of shoes thanks to mom and dad. The show we are installing at work has turned into a nightmare which is pretty typical but by tuesday it well be ready for the opening and if I am lucky I will get back into the studio by wednesday.
