a vote for obama is a vote for mcgovern

Since I tend to filter most information and ideas i have on culture through the lens of visual art and it's histories, I was struck by some similarities between today's political campaign visuals and those of the recent past. First I have always seen the obvious connection between shepard fairey's work , on the left, and andy warhol's on the right. While Warhol was obsessed with celebrity, image, surface and american pop culture, Fairey is obsessed with the visuals of early 20th century soviet propaganda, late 20th century rock n roll, punk and skateboard culture. Both artists received tremendous attention in their lifetime and both embrace mechanical reproduction for artistic and practical reasons. When Fairey openly endorsed Obama with his iconic hope and change poster images he joined a long list of american artists who make presidential year artworks. I immediately saw the connection to Warhol's "Vote Mcgovern" poster which featured a picture of Nixon and was ironically using Nixon's image to make a typically warholian ambivalent statement "don't vote for nixon, mcgovern is mediocre but at least he is not NIxon". I had sort of forgotten about this but then on yesterdays episode of wait wait don't tell me , Mcgovern was a featured guest. They spoke about how nixon stole the election and was proven to be a crook. Mcgovern was incredibly humble and funny ,and even resisted the temptation to kick Nixon when he was down, but instead let the bad be interred with the bones instead of the good. So breaking with warhols approach shepard fairey's image gives us a positive endorsement of obama. Fairey recasts obama in his signature three color style based on an interpretation of propaganda posters but given a positive message with simple graphic style. In this version the typical red black and tan of faireys best known images is swapped out for a patriotic red white and blue. I go through all this because Fairey's style is just that a style, one he has used for the creation of numerous works for many years. His style is a filter he can apply to any message or visual he wants to present. And although his expressive style is devoid of the hand marks of many expressive works(the gestures on warhols juxatposed with the photo silkscreen image) it is no less imbued with the artist's mark. So when I hear those on the campaign trail and in the media refer to The obama image as "his own presidential seal" a subtle jab that both palin and mccain have used, I nearly choke on my art history. The implication of this is that obama designed and disseminated this image, but in fact it is fan art. Fairey did this independent of the obama campaign, just like warhol created his image independent of the McGovern campaign. Instead of damning the opposite though, faireys simply casts the candidate in a positive light. I think too often when artwork is used to promote a message we forget to look at the artwork as just art. For me I wonder what it says about contemporary artists, myself included, if the work and ideas we make are inexplicably linked to the work and ideas of artists from the 60's, the very generation we seem to be locked in an ideological struggle with today. It makes me think that indeed we are just witnessing a little bit of art history repeating.

just keep finding great still life objects

this is just a little studio still life with my ever growing collection of found sculpture. left to right are an arrangement of fence posts, wooden circles, big steel pole, behind that is a payphone, and leaning on that is a set of ikea bed slats.
i keep finding great materials like these circles of wood. they were part of a display case i found. I think in time i will have enough found and stacked and arranged things that i will be able to create an installation that mimics the way i see the world.

above are the wood circles still with their steel braces below after i removed the steel, i really like the stain around the edge s from the steel.

above is a fine example of a found sculpture field, one of my favorites.

new inspirational source

I have really been into dunkin donuts coffee and noticed well over a year ago that they had modified their logo to emphasize  the coffee and not their god awful donuts. For years here in charleston the only dunkin was a lonely little shop up on Savanah highway( ironically my studio is located equidistant between the dunkin and the nearest starbucks, so no shortage of material or inspiration for me), but now they have the first dunkin downtown. Best of all the dunkin is in the bank of america building. Prior to this I had only seen combo starbucks and bank of america drive thrus. So in recognition of new times i have appropriated/improved yet another of my favorite logos. I knew if I kept these new types of coffee cups around they would work their way into my work. Speaking of work I am gearing up for my next installation, which is only four weeks away, so I will get some shots of "research" up on the blog soon. I am pretty intent on finishing up the first water bottle cycle of work and getting them ready to show. Here are a few More images of the finished piece in Brooklyn, which as far as i know is still standing...

day 10 @ dam stuhltrager

So I am all but finished, I still need to take some longshots of the piece, and I am working on a panoramic view, and maybe even a quicktime vr if i get a chance. It was a little iffy there for a day with those couple collapses, but everything should stay put until the opening on friday. I've spent today sending out emails and posting on facebook, so hopefully people will get excited about it. I know I'm excited since the last tend dasy have been a blur of weaving fury. I will probably got fix up a few areas and do laundry today, but I am in pretty good shape for now.

I managed to get the piece out into the main gallery and utilized this awesome architectural detail in the wall.

this is a kind of darkly lit and shaky video walk through, but i promise to make a better video when i get a chance.

day 9@ dam stuhltrager

this area has been one that i keep having to go back and mend, but seems to be holding for now.

i added more height to this part of the wall and will finish it up tomorrow, this should be that last of it i hope.

below is the new mended and stable back wall area, heres hoping it stays put for the opening on friday.

on the ninth day i rested...sort of. I slept in a bit,and watched the cbs sunday morning show and then got back to mending and finishing different sections of the piece. after taking an extended dinner break for a shower and a torta i went back for an evening session to see if all the new sections held up okay, and they did. so now it is off to bed and back at it tomorrow morning.

day 8 @ dam stuhltrager

Because the collapse happened so suddenly and drastically at the start of day 8 i did not get a photo of it, but after i re-set this wall area i built it out some more so there is a more complete experience when you cross around the other side of the piece. Today I will get back to work on both this far wall and the section that leads to the main gallery.

i focused on bringing this wall down a little bit hoping that it will give some more strength to this section, we will see. The humidity has given me some unusual problems since the sticks have taken on so much moisture that some of them actually flex and bend into circles and have become rubbery. This means that it becomes a little more difficult to create the tension necessary to make the piece rigid in the areas where it needs to be.

it is hard to tell but i know i have had to reset and mend this section twice now, but this time i think i have it pinned in pretty good, but i will check again in a couple of hours to see if it has shifted at all.

day 7 @ dam stuhltrager

today i spent most of my time fleshing out the form nearest to the entryway, and started making it lead out into the gallery. That is all for now, looking forward to getting started back again tomorrow, and i'm hoping that the relative humidity doesn't change too much causing the sticks to bend and pop.

i almost forgot to bring the chair out before i finished this section.

tomorrow i am going to tackle this section and get back to work on fleshing out the area around the wall, which will probably take me into the next day as well

day 6 at dam stuhltrager

I feel like i regained alot of ground today and the piece is starting to really resolve itself and should only take a few more days, maybe 4 or five, which will leave me with a day off before the opening.

this is sal the dog, he also belongs to the gallery. sal is a good boy because he does not eat the art nor does he wag his tail too aggressively near the piece. He mostly just sits there and watches me while i work.
this is the updated view of looking through from the front gallery

I spent most of today working on this section of the piece trying to round it out towards the entry way.
